NAACP Gives Dutch an "A"
PHILADELPHIA -- The NAACP is out with its annual congressional report cards and Maryland's eight Democrats got straight As, while the state's two congressional Republicans both received Fs.
The civil rights group awarded the grades based on votes cast in Congress during 2003.
Congressmen Wayne Gilchrest and Roscoe Bartlett were both given an F. The NAACP report says both voted against extending unemployment benefits and against increased funding for failing public elementary schools.
Sens. Paul Sarbanes and Barbara Mikulski were both given an A for votes supporting increased funding for higher education and Head Start programs. Reps. Dutch Ruppersberger, Benjamin Cardin, Elijah Cummings, Albert Wynn, Steny Hoyer and Chris Van Hollen also received grades of A.
