Baltimore-Washington International Airport has received a $4.7 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to help pay for concrete ramps and taxiways around Pier A, the new terminal for Southwest Airlines, it was announced yesterday.
The Pier A construction project is a key component of the $1.8 billion expansion plan at the airport, and will provide facilities needed by Southwest Airlines, the bargain carrier that now accounts for about 50 percent of the flights at BWI.
When completed, the new Southwest terminal will provide the Dallas-based airline with 26 gates to accommodate future growth at BWI. Completion is expected in 2005, said U.S. Sen. Paul S. Sarbanes, who made the announcement in concert with Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski and Rep. C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger.
